The SUV offensive

Volkswagen celebrated a milestone in Malaysia with the unveiling of the all-new Tiguan Allspace range.

In the past, SUVs were mainly for people who often travelled around in the hills or mountains. Times have certainly changed - now SUVs can be found in the households of young families, singles and couples of retirement age. Many business customers are also opting for sports utility vehicles. In Malaysia, SUVs account for 22.5% share of the market, and sales continue to grow year after year.

SUVs score particularly well with customers on three counts: field of vision, safety and comfort. In addition, there is the idea of freedom, because an SUV conveys the feeling of being able to drive spontaneously into the country, or even off-road. With this feeling of freedom combined with comfort, speed and safety, the SUV becomes an all-rounder. It promises the customer the best of both vehicle worlds.

Consequently, every fourth Volkswagen delivered by the Volkswagen brand today is already a sport utility vehicle, and the trend is rising. The brand plans to have over 30 SUV models on offer worldwide by 2025. During the same year, Volkswagen expects every second Volkswagen passenger car to be an SUV.

The rise of the Tiguan

At the beginning of 2019, the five millionth Tiguan rolled off the production line at the Wolfsburg plant in January. Since its market launch in 2007, the compact Tiguan has been successful worldwide, giving significant momentum to the brand's growth and SUV offensive.

Here in Malaysia, Volkswagen's SUV offensive continues with the introduction of the TIguan Allspace R-Line and Highline variants.

The more spacious and longer-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace triggered another positive boost for Volkswagen. More than 700,000 units were sold globally when it was first launched in 2017, and the figure rose to more than 800,000 in the next year.

The Tiguan and the Tiguan Allspace are currently manufactured at Volkswagen production sites in China, Germany, Mexico and Russia and here at the Pekan plant in Pahang.
