50 years of GTI. Still the benchmark.

Five decades in, every drive still puts a smile on your face.

Three letters, one icon.

In 1976, what began as a bold idea in Wolfsburg grew into a defining force in automotive history — shaping a new category and setting the benchmark for performance in a compact form. Since then, more than 2.5 million units of Golf GTI have been produced. Today, the icon marks 50 years of driving evolution.

From the first to the eighth generation.

Fast, fun, practical and with just the right amount of naughty, the Golf GTI changed what a compact car could be.

It brought performance to everyday roads and made school runs, date nights and teh tarik hangouts feel a little more exciting.

Golf I GTI

(1976 - 1983)

“Secret” operation turned to reality.

Unveiled in 1975, the first Golf GTI turned a radical idea into reality. With 81 kW (110 PS) in a lightweight body, it combined everyday usability with genuine performance — defined by signature elements like the red grille line and Clarke plaid" tartan seats. Originally planned for just 5,000 units, demand far exceeded expectations, with over 461,000 produced and a legacy that would shape the hot hatch for generations.

Golf II GTI

(1984 - 1991)

Evolving the Icon.

Introduced in 1984, the Golf II GTI built on the original’s success, carrying forward its iconic design cues and distinctive character. It combined greater refinement with improved performance, while introducing new technologies such as anti-lock braking (ABS) and power steering. Signature elements like tartan sports seats remained, as power and capability continued to evolve.

Golf III GTI

(1991 - 1997)

New era of safety.

More refined yet unmistakably GTI, the third generation marked a shift into a new era of safety by introducing its first front airbags, while growing in size and comfort. With the “20 Years” edition marking a key milestone, the Golf III GTI showed a more mature side — without losing its edge.

Golf IV GTI

(1997 - 2003)

A new expression of GTI.

The Golf IV GTI adopted a more understated design, moving away from signature elements like the red grille strip. It also marked a first for the GTI, introducing a diesel variant alongside its petrol lineup. The “25 Years of GTI” edition, with up to 180 PS, marked a milestone — bridging heritage and a new generation of GTI.

Golf V GTI

(2004 - 2008)

A new shift in performance.

Introduced in 2004, the Golf IV GTI marked a powerful return to form — sharper in design, stronger in performance. Equipped with a 200 PS turbocharged engine, it redefined the GTI driving experience with significantly improved handling. For the first time, the GTI featured Volkswagen’s dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), delivering faster and smoother shifts.

Golf VI GTI

(2009 - 2012)

Greater control, sharper performance.

The Golf VI GTI sharpened the formula with greater control and dynamic capability. Tuned with input from racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, it introduced electronic differential lock (XDS), enhancing grip and cornering performance. Fun fact: the most powerful factory-produced Golf GTI Cabriolet was the sixth generation GTI.

Golf VII GTI

(2013 - 2019)

From road to racetrack.

The Golf VII GTI is renowned for being the first GTI built on the versatile MQB platform, which reduced weight by up to 42kg. Built on a lighter, sharper platform, the Golf VII GTI pushed performance with more power, greater precision and track-focused variants like the Clubsport and Clubsport S.

Golf VIII GTI

(2020 - 2024)

Digital Evolution of GTI.

The Golf VIII GTI brings the icon into a new era, combining performance with a fully digital driving experience. Powered by a 2.0 TSI engine and 7-speed DSG, it delivers sharper performance with systems like the Vehicle Dynamics Manager for greater control. A fully digital cockpit, intuitive touch and voice controls, and IQ.DRIVE driver assistance enhance everyday usability, while signature lighting reinterprets its heritage.

The wild side of GTI.

Some GTIs made it to the road. Some went straight into our dream garage.

GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo

A video game fantasy with real-world bite.

Created for Gran Turismo, this extreme two-door roadster looks like it drove out of a racing dream. With a 3.0-litre VR6 twin-turbo engine, it is loud, low and very much not here to behave.

Design Vision GTI

Wide body. Big power. Zero chill.

Built for the Wörthersee festival, the Design Vision GTI pushed the hot hatch idea to the edge with 503 hp, serious aerodynamics and a stance that basically says, “move”.

GTI W12-650

Someone put a W12 in a Golf. Icon behaviour.

This one is pure madness in the best way. Based on the Mk5 Golf, the GTI W12-650 packed a mid-mounted 6.0-litre W12 engine with 641 hp and a top speed of over 200 mph.

Unnecessary? Maybe. Legendary? Definitely.

Loved by drivers. Spotted with icons.

Carlos Sainz

A racing name with serious pace attached to it. No surprise the GTI sits comfortably in a world built around speed, control and confidence.

Mark Zuckerberg

Tech moves fast. So does the GTI. Smart, compact and always ahead of the curve, it is the kind of car that makes sense without feeling sensible.

Dulquer Salmaan

Stylish, charismatic and properly cool, Dulquer’s connection to the GTI proves one thing clearly. Good taste travels well.

Jeremy Clarkson

When one of the world’s loudest car voices has something to say about the GTI, people listen. The GTI has always been that kind of car. Easy to love, hard to ignore.
