Direct petrol injection with charging
Direct petrol injection is combined with a turbocharger. This enhances the engine's combustion efficiency so the TSI engine power output is much higher than that of conventional, naturally aspirated engines.
Torque when you want it
TSI engines are designed to deliver maximum torque at a low rpm (from 1500 or 1750 rpm). Not only does this increase your driving pleasure, but also cuts fuel consumption.
Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
The DSG is a type of dual-clutch transmission. This transmission allows for rapid, single-motion shifting which increases the driving responsiveness of the car.
In comparison, a conventional automatic or manual transmission has to shift out of gear, move to the next gear, and then shift into that gear. On the other hand, a DSG can shift out of one gear straight into the next in one fluid motion. This not only increases the responsiveness and reduces the shifting period, but also avoids excessive wear and tear.
The DSG comprises one compact unit of sensors that uses information such as engine speed, road speed, accelerator position and driving mode to select the optimum gear and to determine the ideal shift point.
Advanced Electronic Differential Lock (XDS)
XDS is an advanced electronic differential lock, linked to a sophisticated Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) system.
We designed it to maximise road holding and improve responses, especially when cornering. In moments of fast cornering XDS gives out exactly the right amount of power, providing pressure on the inside wheel to prevent wheel spinning.
The result is better traction and a reduction of any tendency to understeer. You'll experience a more agile, precise and calm driving performance with better traction out of bends. In other words, you can enjoy sporty driving in your Volkswagen, knowing you have a reassuringly higher level of safety.
Conventional steering systems use a constant steering ratio. As the name implies, progressive steering is based on a progressive steering ratio.
This significantly reduces the effort required for low-speed maneuvering and parking. On twisting roads and at junctions, the driver will notice a more dynamic response as a result of the more direct steering.
In addition, the need to change hands is significantly reduced. In technical terms, progressive steering features variable tooth spacing on the rack and pinion and a more powerful electric motor than the standard electromechanical steering.
On all MQB models with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, power is distributed between front and rear axles on an infinitely variable basis by a multi-plate clutch. Normally, power is mainly transmitted to the front axle, which saves energy.
However, in the event of an impending loss of traction, the rear axle is activated in a fraction of a second. This is why 4MOTION is considered to be a permanently engaged four-wheel-drive system. The distribution of power to all four wheels becomes active before wheelspin occurs. A loss of traction is therefore virtually excluded.
There is no fixed distribution of power. Power distribution is continuously adjusted to actual driving conditions. However, should any wheel slip, power is immediately transmitted to the wheels where it is needed.
