27 December, 1945

The first Type 1 (the original name for the Beetle) rolls out of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. By the last day of 1945, 55 cars have been built.

1945

In just 10 years, one million Beetle units are produced, setting a record that surpasses any car in Europe.

The Beetle makes its first cinematic appearance as Herbie. It has since appeared in other numerous films, and most recently as Bumblebee in the 2018.

1968

The original Beetle was locally assembled by Champion Motors in Shah Alam. Production went on till 1977.

1972

The original Beetle hits 15,007,034 sales worldwide.

1998

The New Beetle makes it international debut complete with an in-dash flower vase, and we are in love.

 

1999

The Beetle's "Think Small" ad campaign is named the best campaign of the last 100 years by Advertising Age.

2003

The last of the original Beetle leaves the production line at the Volkswagen Pueblo factory. 21,529,464 units had been produced.

2012

The successor to the new Beetle is launched by Volkswagen Malaysia and is offered in 1.2L and 2.0L engine options.

2014

The most powerful Beetle ever, the 560hp Global Rallycross Beetle is unveiled.

2015

The original Herbie is sold in an auction for USD126,500.

2016

The Beetle Dune is launched in Malaysia. Only 50 units were available for sale.

 

 

2017 

Volkswagen makes history when 12 units of the special edition Beetle sells out in 20 minutes on Lazada in Malaysia.

The New Beetle has united tradition and lifestyle since its launch in 1998. It and its successor, which was introduced in 2011, have attracted millions of fans around the world. The last car will be produced in 2019.
